I participated in a rather unforgettable class yesterday, not so much due to the content of the class as for the fact that one of the biggest earthquakes in Japan's recent history happened while I was in it!
The class was to make washi eggs, where blown eggs are covered in beautiful washi paper - a traditional Japanese paper made from the bark of the gampi tree. Washi paper is generally tougher than ordinary paper and is used in many traditional arts. Because of its toughness, it can be glued and manipulated without breaking, so ideal for wrapping an egg! It was quite a delicate operation, and I still have to coat it with a few coats of varnish, but I'm pretty pleased with the results.
We also got to make a box to contain the washi eggs, also covered in pretty washi paper.
Just as we were finishing the box, the earthquake hit. We all dived under the table and sat it out while it all happened around us. Quite an experience. My heart goes out to all the people that have been affected by this disaster. I can only imagine what some people have been through and feel lucky that I am safe and sound.
