Wanderlust Wednesday

Are you suffering from wanderlust? I definitely am! During normal times I would satisfy my lust for wander with a trip abroad. Sadly travel restrictions mean that’s not possible so I’ll have to make do with doodling my own version instead! It's been a long time since I went to Japan and I've created this little homage to that amazing country with an illustration of Mount Fuji, complete with red sun, orange torii gate and bamboo leaves.

This illustration has a matching Mount Fuji print on three different backgrounds which can all be found in my Spoonflower shop. You can buy it by the yard on a variety of fabric choices or have it made up into home accessories such as cushions, curtains and tableware.

Some new additions

A few weeks ago I mentioned on my blog that I had bought some fab new cotton fabrics in Tokyo.
Most of the pieces I bought are furoshiki or tenegui fabrics and each one was chosen because it had a fun element to it. The torii gates have been very popular in the past, so I was glad to find more of that, and who could resist the dancing ninjas?!

I have finally started making them up into cosmetic bags and here is an example of a few of them.
The prints are so much fun to work with and I enjoyed finding the right lining to match each fabric.
They have all been added to my store recently and you can find them here. I use mine as a cosmetic bag, but they could also be used as a handbag organiser or as a gadget pouch for chargers etc.

I love the torii gate fabric on this purse. It has an orange and white polka dot lining.
Torii gates can be found at the entrance to a shinto shrine and are often painted a bright orange colour.

The dancing ninjas are so sweet! I decided to give them a black and white polka dot lining.

This Fuji fabric purse is so much fun and it was given a red and white polka dot lining to match the sun peeking out from behind the cloud.

Torii gates

In Japan there are many torii gates in stunning orange hues. The torii gates are most commonly found at the entrance to a shinto shrine and mark the transition from the profane to the sacred. I have always loved their awesome presence and was amazed by the amount of them at the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine in Kyoto.

I was very excited to rediscover a torii-inspired fabric in my stash recently, and so decided to make up a coin purse and cosmetic bag in the fabric, with a bright orange polka dot lining. I will be selling them at the International Bazaar in Tokyo next week!
