Kimono scarf

I recently received some stunning kimono fabrics in the mail from Japan and I've been busy sewing with them and creating some stunning decorative scarves.

This kimono scarf is made from a beautiful multi colour fabric depicting abstract images of bowls in a variety of designs. It looks great draped around the neck.

This kimono has been pieced together with another kimono fabric in a shade of burgundy/brown.

The colours are so vibrant and are a great way to lift an outfit.

Kimono scarf

I lived in Tokyo for four years and during that time I amassed a rather large collection of kimonos and kimono pieces. I often went to shrine sales where you could find some amazing pieces and I would always gravitate towards the brightly coloured fabrics or the ones with bold prints. Sometimes I bought a whole kimono and sometimes I would just buy small pieces of kimono. I didn't always know what I would do with these fabrics, but was drawn to them for a reason.

I soon realised that the smaller kimono pieces I bought were perfect for making into patchwork kimono scarves. The more the fabrics and colours clash, the more interesting it becomes as a finished piece.

Vibrant purple sits next to soft green and over-sized florals and butterflies become abstract shapes.

Every angle of the scarf looks different and you can change the feel of it depending on how you wear it.

Kimono magic

I've just added a piece of magic to my store. This stunning decorative silk scarf made from vintage kimono fabric swatches from my collection, pieced together to create a patchwork effect.

I decided to use a pleasing colour palette of terracotta, cream and black in a variety of fabric weights and textures.

The scarf is double-sided, so that either way you arrange it, a stunning design will be showing.

I love the combination of floral fabrics with geometric fabrics, and I've also included a solid black silk to help break up the colours a bit.

The scarf can be worn in many different ways and it's fun to play with different combinations.

It matches perfectly with the kimono handbag below.
